Old news, but this is the most complete you will read on this subject.

For Brazilians, it was so flattering to have George Harrison, the guitar player from the acclaimed British band The Beatles playing the guitar to record this Brazilian hit Anna Julia, written and played by Los Hermanos band, from Rio.

Harrison was invited to record it along with Paul Weller (The Jam) on backing vocals and Ian Paice (Deep Purple) on drums by his friend Jim Capaldi (Traffic). What a team, huh!

George Harrison (England, 1943 – 2001) was The Beatles’ guitar player, the youngest, quiet and spiritualized member of the band; besides being a singer, an actor, a composer and a musical and cinematographic producer.

The Beatles

Jim Capaldi (England, 1944 – 2005) was a British drummer. In addition to working with his band, he played with artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and George Harrison himself. He married a Brazilian in 1975 and lived between England and Brazil for decades, dying in 2005, because of cancer, at the age of 60.

Jim listened to the song in Brazil during a season in the country. This is due to the bombastic success of the hit Anna Júlia in the country, which was played to exhaustion in graduation parties, weddings, radios and on MTV. It was one of the main hits of the end of the millennium in Brazil. One of those catchy songs that you are proud of and that would sound cool even in Japanese! It was in 1999 that the band Los Hermanos released its debut album and soon became a fever in the nation. However, it was a one-hit-only band.

In 2001, Jim released an album called Living on the Outside and Anna Júlia is one of the pieces chosen for the repertoire. George Harrison’s participation was one of the last of his entire career, as he died on November 29, 2001 (cancer). In an interview with the BBC, Jim said that:

“Anna Julia has, at the same time, a strong and simple vibration. The style of this song, as well as the verses and the chorus, are very reminiscent of the first Beatles songs”

The lead singer of Los Hermanos said:

“I found it very cool, it was really surprising to listen to it and realize it is so much like our version, the original. I thought it was unbelievable George Harrison to have done a guitar solo just like mine”

You can listen to this foreigner stellar version in ENGLISH here (Harrison does not appear in the videoclip):

What also make Brazilians very happy is the fact that this hit song also got Italian and Spanish versions.

In ITALIANO, with Daniele Groff:

In SPANISH:

There is also the MEME version made by MacacoArroz people:

Original lyrics in Portuguese:
Quem te vê passar assim por mim
Não sabe o que é sofrer
Ter que ver você, assim, sempre tão linda
Contemplar o sol do teu olhar, perder você no ar
Na certeza de um amor
Me achar um nada
Pois sem ter teu carinho
Eu me sinto sozinho
Eu me afogo em solidão

Oh, Anna Júlia
Oh, Anna Júlia

Nunca acreditei na ilusão de ter você pra mim
Me atormenta a previsão do nosso destino
Eu passando o dia a te esperar
Você sem me notar
Quando tudo tiver fim, você vai estar com um cara
Um alguém sem carinho
Será sempre um espinho
Dentro do meu coração

English version lyrics:

Can’t you hear that lonely symphony
It’s playing just for me
It’s the same old misery
Trying to bring me down
And I just wanna cry out loud
And tell you how I feel
Seeing your face in every crowd
Is making my heart beat harder
For the chance to be near you
And whenever I see you
And there’s nothing can hold me down

Oh Anna Julia
Oh Anna Julia

All the guys that follow you around
Are trying to catch your eye
They just think that I’m a clown
I’m crazy to even try
But when I see you on the street
My whole world starts to change
Then the blood beneath my feet
Starts burning me up like a fire
And I feel like I’m falling
That’s when I hear you calling
Hold my breath and look around

Oh Anna Julia
Oh Anna Julia

Pray for the day when your love sets me free
People say there’s no way
That your love’s not for me
But there’ll come a day
When I tell you all that I feel
And they’ll stand and watch
While you walk away with me

Oh Anna Julia
Oh Anna Julia, Julia, Julia

I remember singing this song a lot in the break between classes with my friends in High School. And it was unforgettable to have this song played 3x at our HS graduation party, live, by a great band from town. It was a mixture of joy and excitement. Great memories! In Brazil, some schools plan some huge, beautiful HS graduation parties, with a traditional ceremony, the waltz, everybody dressing up… Oh those years!

Give it a thumbs up if you like it. It motivates me to write more. It makes me choose to come here to write instead of reading one of the books I’m reading, or watching a movie, or playing the piano … Got it?
